World Renown Heart Surgeon Speaks Out On What Really Causes Heart Disease


We physicians with all our training, knowledge and authority often acquire a rather large ego that tends to make it difficult to admit we are wrong. So, here it is. I freely admit to being wrong.. As a heart surgeon with 25 years experience, having performed over 5,000 open-heart surgeries,today is my day to right the wrong with medical and scientific fact.




I trained for many years with other prominent physicians labelled “opinion makers.”  Bombarded with scientific literature, continually attending education seminars, we opinion makers insisted heart disease resulted from the simple fact of elevated blood cholesterol.

The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake. The latter of course we insisted would lower cholesterol and heart disease. Deviations from these recommendations were considered heresy and could quite possibly result in malpractice.



It Is Not Working!


These recommendations are no longer scientifically or morally defensible. The discovery a few years ago that inflammation in the artery wall is the real cause of heart disease is slowly leading to a paradigm shift in how heart disease and other chronic ailments will be treated.

The long-established dietary recommendations have created epidemics of obesity and diabetes, the consequences of which dwarf any historical plague in terms of mortality, human suffering and dire economic consequences.

Despite the fact that 25% of the population takes expensive statin medications and despite the fact we have reduced the fat content of our diets, more Americans will die this year of heart disease than ever before.

Statistics from the American Heart Association show that 75 million Americans currently suffer from heart disease, 20 million have diabetes and 57 million have pre-diabetes. These disorders are affecting younger and younger people in greater numbers every year.

Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped.

Inflammation is not complicated -- it is quite simply your body's natural defence to a foreign invader such as a bacteria, toxin or virus. The cycle of inflammation is perfect in how it protects your body from these bacterial and viral invaders. However, if we chronically expose the body to injury by toxins or foods the human body was never designed to process,a condition occurs called chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is just as harmful as acute inflammation is beneficial.

What thoughtful person would willfully expose himself repeatedly to foods or other substances that are known to cause injury to the body?  Well,smokers perhaps, but at least they made that choice willfully.

The rest of us have simply followed the recommended mainstream dietthat is low in fat and high in polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates, not knowing we were causing repeated injury to our blood vessels. Thisrepeated injury creates chronic inflammation leading to heart disease,stroke, diabetes and obesity.

Let me repeat that: The injury and inflammation in our blood vessels is caused by the low fat diet recommended for years by mainstream medicine.
What are the biggest culprits of chronic inflammation? Quite simply, they are the overload of simple, highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flourand all the products made from them) and the excess consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower that are found in many processed foods.

Take a moment to visualize rubbing a stiff brush repeatedly over soft skin until it becomes quite red and nearly bleeding. you kept this up several times a day, every day for five years. If you could tolerate this painful brushing, you would have a bleeding, swollen infected area that became worse with each repeated injury. This is a good way to visualize the inflammatory process that could be going on in your body right now.

Regardless of where the inflammatory process occurs, externally or internally, it is the same. I have peered inside thousands upon thousands of arteries. A diseased artery looks as if someone took a brush and scrubbed repeatedly against its wall. Several times a day, every day, the foods we eat create small injuries compounding into more injuries, causing the body to respond continuously and appropriately with inflammation.

While we savor the tantalizing taste of a sweet roll, our bodies respond alarmingly as if a foreign invader arrived declaring war. Foods loaded with sugars and simple carbohydrates, or processed withomega-6 oils for long shelf life have been the mainstay of the American diet for six decades. These foods have been slowly poisoning everyone.

How does eating a simple sweet roll create a cascade of inflammation to make you sick?

Imagine spilling syrup on your keyboard and you have a visual of what occurs inside the cell. When we consume simple carbohydrates such as sugar, blood sugar rises rapidly. In response, your pancreas secretes insulin whose primary purpose is to drive sugar into each cell where it is stored for energy. If the cell is full and does not need glucose, it is rejected to avoid extra sugar gumming up the works.

When your full cells reject the extra glucose, blood sugar rises producing more insulin and the glucose converts to stored fat.


What does all this have to do with inflammation? Blood sugar is controlled in a very narrow range. Extra sugar molecules attach to a variety of proteins that in turn injure the blood vessel wall. This repeated injury to the blood vessel wall sets off inflammation. When you spike your blood sugar level several times a day, every day, it is exactly like taking sandpaper to the inside of your delicate blood vessels.

While you may not be able to see it, rest assured it is there. I saw it in over 5,000 surgical patients spanning 25 years who all shared one common denominator -- inflammation in their arteries.

Let’s get back to the sweet roll. That innocent looking goody not only contains sugars, it is baked in one of many omega-6 oils such as soybean. Chips and fries are soaked in soybean oil; processed foods are manufactured with omega-6 oils for longer shelf life. While omega-6’s are essential -they are part of every cell membrane controlling what goes in and out of the cell -- they must be in the correct balance with omega-3’s.

If the balance shifts by consuming excessive omega-6, the cell membrane produces chemicals called cytokines that directly cause inflammation.

Today’s mainstream American diet has produced an extreme imbalance of these two fats. The ratio of imbalance ranges from 15:1 to as high as 30:1 in favor of omega-6. That’s a tremendous amount of cytokines causing inflammation. In today’s food environment, a 3:1 ratio would be optimal and healthy.

To make matters worse, the excess weight you are carrying from eating these foods creates overloaded fat cells that pour out large quantities of pro-inflammatory chemicals that add to the injury caused by having high blood sugar. The process that began with a sweet roll turns into a vicious cycle over time that creates heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetesand finally, Alzheimer’s disease, as the inflammatory process continues unabated.

There is no escaping the fact that the more we consume prepared and processed foods, the more we trip the inflammation switch little by little each day. The human body cannot process, nor was it designed to consume, foods packed with sugars and soaked in omega-6 oils.


There is but one answer to quieting inflammation, and that is returning to foods closer to their natural state. To build muscle, eat more protein. Choose carbohydrates that are very complex such as colorful fruits and vegetables. Cut down on or eliminate inflammation- causing omega-6 fats like corn and soybean oil and the processed foods that are made from them.

One tablespoon of corn oil contains 7,280 mg of omega-6; soybean contains 6,940 mg. Instead, use olive oil or butter from grass-fed beef. 

Animal fats 
contain less than 20% omega-6 and are much less likely to cause inflammation than the supposedly healthy oils labelled polyunsaturated. Forget the “science” that has been drummed into your head for decades. The science that saturated fat alone causes heart disease is non-existent. The science that saturated fat raises blood cholesterol is also very weak. Since we now know that cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease, the concern about saturated fat is even more absurd today.

The cholesterol theory led to the no-fat, low-fat recommendations that in turn created the very foods now causing an epidemic of inflammation. Mainstream medicine made a terrible mistake when it advised people to avoid saturated fat in favor of foods high in omega-6 fats. We now have an epidemic of arterial inflammation leading to heart disease and other silent killers.

What you can do is choose whole foods your grandmother served and not those your mom turned to as grocery store aisles filled with manufactured foods. By eliminating inflammatory foods and adding essential nutrients from fresh unprocessed food, you will reverse years of damage in your arteries and throughout your body from consuming the typical American diet.

Mélatonine : un somnifère naturel


L'Union Européenne a enfin autorisé un produit naturel qui aide à mieux dormir : la mélatonine.

Si vous me demandez mon avis, les personnes qui ont interdit cette substance naturelle pendant tant d'années, sans aucun argument scientifique, alors que les troubles du sommeil touchent 25 à 40 % de la population, ont commis une grave faute à l'encontre de leurs concitoyens.

A la limite, un avocat un peu malin pourrait les poursuivre pour avoir :

  1. intoxiqué des millions de personnes en les obligeant à recourir aux somnifères chimiques, les benzodiazépines, qui sont de véritables poisons, alors que la mélatonine est naturelle et sans danger ;
  2. contribué à vider les caisses d'assurance-maladie par leur bêtise (ou leur corruption ?) : la mélatonine est très bon marché et n'est couverte par aucun brevet, contrairement aux somnifères industriels ; elle coûte donc nettement moins cher ;
  3. privé les populations d'une substance naturelle et sans danger, qui a bien d'autres effets positifs pour la santé.
Mais soyons positifs, et revenons aux bienfaits que vous pouvez désormais tirer de la mélatonine :

Un moyen efficace contre l'insomnie

Dès que la lumière du jour faiblit, votre glande pinéale, qui se trouve dans votre cerveau, commence à secréter de la mélatonine. Cette substance, qui est une hormone naturelle, prépare votre organisme au sommeil et au repos. (1)

En effet, la glande pinéale est reliée directement aux nerfs optiques : elle est en prise directe avec la lumière. C'est pourquoi la mélatonineest connue comme l'hormone qui règle votre horloge biologique, aussi appelé rythme veille-sommeil ou rythme circadien. C'est la raison pour laquelle les personnes aveugles ont souvent du mal à dormir.

Tous les organismes vivants sans exception possèdent de la mélatonine : animaux, plantes, algues, bactéries, etc. Cela leur permet de s'adapter au jour et à la nuit, mais aussi aux saisons.

Selon les chercheurs, la mélatonine serait liée à l'apparition de la vie sur terre, et une des plus anciennes molécules restée inchangée depuis l'aube de l'humanité. 

Or, de nombreux facteurs très présents dans la vie moderne ralentissent ou bloquent la production de la mélatonine : lumière électrique, médicaments, ondes électromagnétiques.

a Prendre un peu de mélatonine le soir avant se coucher peut donc aider les personnes insomniaques à retrouver un sommeil réparateur et de qualité. Mais avant de vous dire comment, examinons d'abord ces facteurs anti-mélatonine, car c'est d'abord en vous protégeant contre eux que vous pourrez améliorer votre sommeil :

Les médicaments

De tous les moyens connus pour détruire les réserves naturelles de mélatonine, si l'on exclut le tabac et l'alcool, c'est sans doute la consommation régulière de certains médicaments qui est la plus redoutable et, en particulier, des somnifères et des anxiolytiques, couramment prescrits par les médecins pour améliorer le sommeil !!

Ceci est particulièrement choquant quand on sait que, bien qu'il soit déconseillé d'avoir recours à ces médicaments pendant plus d'un mois, une personne sur cinq (22 % de la population française) le fait malgré tout.

Plus inquiétant encore, ces médicaments sont de plus en plus consommés par les jeunes : 6 % des moins de 25 ans déclarent prendre ces médicaments. 

Enfin, presque la moitié (49 %) des plus de 75 ans déclarent en prendre de manière régulière, alors que cette famille de médicaments est suspectée de favoriser certaines maladies du système nerveux comme l'Alzheimer !

On marche sur la tête.

Et malheureusement, somnifères et anxiolytiques ne sont pas, de loin, les seuls médicaments à détruire la mélatonine. C'est aussi le cas de l'aspirine, de l'ibuprofène, des béta-bloquants, des antagonistes du calcium, des anti-inflammatoires non stéroïdiens, en tout 75 médicaments avec plus de 120 substances différentes qui sont consommés régulièrement par des millions de personnes dans le monde.

Les béta-bloquants en particulier sont si efficaces contre la mélatonine que les chercheurs les utilisent en laboratoire pour annuler la production de mélatonine chez les animaux, pour les expériences. Ce sont des médicaments très couramment prescrits pour la tension artérielle et certaines arythmies cardiaques (Propranolol).

Les patients qui en prennent ne doivent pas s'étonner d'avoir des insomnies. Une dose inférieure de moitié à la posologie habituelle suffit à stopper la sécrétion de la mélatonine chez l'homme, a démontré en 1992 le Dr G.M.Braun. (2)

Les champs électromagnétiques font aussi chuter les taux de mélatonine.

Si l'on applique des champs magnétiques sur la tête de rongeurs, non seulement leur taux de mélatonine chute de près de 50 %, mais ces champs entrainent un dysfonctionnement de la glande pinéale, qui sécrète la mélatonine.

Or, si vous vivez dans une ville moderne, votre organisme est probablement ceinturé d'ondes électromagnétiques de différentes sources : téléphones portables, radios, antennes relais, appareils électriques. Notre corps ne sait pas faire la différence entre les champs énergétiques naturels et les champs artificiels. Cette pollution invisible affecte directement la mélatonine, ce qui pourrait expliquer pourquoi les troubles du sommeil sont une épidémie en constante augmentation dans les pays industrialisés. 

Une personne sur cinq en France présente une insomnie chronique accompagnée d'une fatigue ou d'une somnolence excessive dans la journée.

Les soucis de la vie, le stress, le mode de vie, l'hygiène de vie, le travail, etc. ne seraient donc pas les seules explications.

Qui peut en prendre et pourquoi ?

La mélatonine pourrait surtout vous aider si vous :

  • vous endormez tard dans la soirée et vous réveillez trop tôt ;
  • vous réveillez souvent la nuit et somnolez ou faites des siestes la journée ;
  • avez du mal à vous endormir.
  • travaillez en horaires décalés (infirmière, pilote de ligne, etc.)
Prendre une supplémentation de mélatonine n'affecte pas la sécrétion naturelle par la glande pinéale, ni court, ni à moyen, ni à long terme. Cela veut dire qu'il n'y a pas de phénomène d'accoutumance.

Un avantage déterminant de la mélatonine c'est qu'elle n'affecte pas la mémoire ni les fonctions cognitives contrairement aux médicaments de la classe des somnifères et anxiolytiques.

La mélatonine est une substance particulièrement efficace pour les personnes qui, passé 45 ans, ont un sommeil de mauvaise qualité, des réveils multiples.

Décalage horaire

Plusieurs études montrent que la mélatonine atténue considérablement les symptômes provoqués par le décalage horaire. Elle permet non seulement de s'endormir plus rapidement une fois sur place, mais surtout d'adapter son rythme biologique à l'heure locale. En réglant ainsi l'horloge interne, elle réduit de moitié le nombre de jours durant lesquels on souffre habituellement du décalage horaire.

C'est pourquoi aujourd'hui est-elle très largement utilisée par les pilotes et hôtesses de l'air. 

Quelle dose prendre ?

Pour dormir, une petite dose de mélatonine est plus efficace qu'une grosse. L'effet intervient dès 0,3 mg/j, à prendre une demi-heure avant de se coucher. (3)

Si vous prenez plus de 2 mg/j, l'effet est moins efficace sur le sommeil et peut entraîner des somnolences le lendemain.

Toxicité

La mélatonine est considérée par les autorités comme un produit très sûr. Depuis le 16 mai 2012, il est même autorisé aux sociétés vendant de la mélatonine d'indiquer sur l'emballage qu'elle « contribue à atténuer les effets du décalage horaire », et à « réduire le temps d'endormissement. » (Règlement (UE) n°432/2012 de la commission). 

Quand on sait la difficulté avec laquelle Bruxelles autorise ce type d'allégations thérapeutiques aux produits naturels en vente libre, c'est une reconnaissance très solide pour la mélatonine.

Toutefois, ne jamais prendre de mélatonine sans surveillance médicale en cas de cancer ou d'épilepsie. Si vous souhaitez bénéficier des effets de la mélatonine en accompagnement d'une chimiothérapie, faites-le uniquement en accord avec votre médecin.

Où en trouver ?

La mélatonine est aujourd'hui libre en Europe, et vous pouvez donc en trouver un peu partout sur Internet, en pharmacie, et même dans certaines grandes surfaces. Il n'existe pas de mélatonine d'origine animale contrairement aux inepties lues sur internet elle est la plupart du temps d'origine végétale.

Pour les personnes qui cherchent une marque précise à acheter, je trouve à titre personnel pratique le format du Laboratoires D-Plantes(Dormela-Nut) que je cite souvent comme référence sérieuse parce qu'ils le méritent. Les gélules sont dosées à 0,9 mg, ce qui correspond aux doses physiologiques efficaces. How to Treat Eczema Naturally: 16 Steps (with Pictures) - wikiHow

Eczema affects people of all ages and can cause misery. Doctors often prescribe a steroidal cream, which for many people doesn't always do the trick. There are other things you can do to ease the terrible itching and blistering. Read on to learn a few natural/home remedies that may assist in your lifelong battle with eczema

    Improve your diet. It is important to remember when dealing with conditions like eczema that the skin is the body's largest organ of elimination -- this means that whatever you put into your body may be reflected on the outside, as the skin excretes waste. As a result, diet plays a huge role in the health of your skin, so a few simple changes could lead to a significant improvement in your eczema. Focus on eating foods that promote gut and liver health, and eliminate as many processed and high-gluten foods as possible.
    • Switch from a standard diet to a wholesome diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, mostly in their raw form.
    • Switch from grain-fed beef, chicken and pork to grass-fed meat products and eat plenty of foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, chia, walnuts and hemp seed.
    • If possible, eliminate gluten from your diet as it may be triggering your skin condition. Cut out bread, pasta, cereals and other processed, carbohydrate rich foods.[1]

    Eliminate milk and dairy products. Cow's milk is possibly the main dietary trigger for eczema, so it is worth cutting it out of your diet (at least temporarily) to see if you notice an improvement. Cow's milk can be quite acidic and is often filled with hormones and chemicals which negatively impact the immune system and aggravate eczema. Try eliminating all cow's milk for at least two weeks and see if you notice any difference.
    • There are many, many substitutes for cow's milk, so don't worry about having to drink your coffee black. Goat, sheep and buffalo milk are all great creamy alternatives.
    • If you want a non-animal substitute you can always go for soy milk, but hazelnut, almond, oat and rice milks are other worthy contenders.[2]

    Take natural supplements. Ideally, people would get all the vitamins and nutrients they need from their diet, but in reality this is rarely the case. Luckily there are plenty of dietary supplements you can take to help in the battle against eczema. Some of the best ones include:
    • Fatty Acids: Fatty acids help to relieve dry skin and reduce inflammation, making them effective for treating eczema. For best results, choose a supplement that contains Omega 3, 6 and 9.
    • Vitamins A, D and E: The combined skin benefits of these vitamins is impressive -- they help the skin to retain hydration, improve its texture, boost collagen production and protect it from free radicals.[1]
    • Supplements containing gamma-linolenic acid: Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is a fatty acid found in evening primrose oil, borage oil and blackcurrant oil. It is believed to help relieve skin inflammation and to correct the balance of lipids in the skin.[3]

    Wear non-irritating clothing. The clothes you wear are in contact with your skin all day long; brushing, rubbing and even chafing the skin. Many people even notice a worsening of their eczema in winter, when they tend to wear more layers. You can improve this situation by making smart clothing choices:
    • Wear loose clothing wherever possible and avoid items made from itchy, scratchy fabrics like wool. Smooth-textured clothing made from cotton, silk and bamboo are the least irritating on your skin.
    • When exercising, wear proper sports clothing designed to keep your skin cool. This will prevent you from sweating excessively, which can aggravate eczema.[4]
    • Also be wary of your washing detergent -- it may be leaving a slight residue on your clothes that's contributing to eczema fare-ups. Try using a natural washing powder, or simply switch to a different biological brand.

    Minimize stress. Eczema and other skin conditions have been strongly linked to stress, both psychological and physical, so taking some time out and working on stress-relief can be extremely beneficial.[5] Alternative treatments such as visualization andhypnotherapy have been suggested as methods of reducing stress, however there are many, easier methods of stress relief that you can incorporate into your daily life:
    • Meditate: Taking just a few minutes out of every day to go somewhere peaceful, close your eyes and focus on your breathing can be hugely beneficial for both your mental and physical health. Try repeating a relaxing mantra to yourself as you mediate, such as "I am calm" or "I am at peace". Activities such as yoga or pilates can have equally beneficial results.
    • Listen to music. Listening to music has been proven to lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety, making it a great antidote for stress. Soothing music, such as classical music or sounds from nature can be extremely relaxing, but singing along to classic rock at the top of your lungs will make you happy!
    • Get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation is a major stress-inducer, so getting a full 7-8 hours sleep a night is essential for reducing stress. If you're a troubled sleeper, try having a relaxing bath before bedtime, make sure your bedroom is cool and dark, and switch off any screens or electronics at least an hour before sleep.[6]

    Choose non-irritating soaps and shampoos. The products you use in the shower can have a huge impact on the condition of your skin, so it is important to be aware of the products you are using and the ingredients they contain. As a general rule, the more natural and moisturizing a product is, the less irritating it will be on eczema-prone skin. You should avoid anti-bacterial and deodorant products, as these can be extremely drying.
    • Avoid shower gels and soaps with dyes and perfumes -- while they may look and smell nice, they are usually full of chemicals which are harsh and drying on the skin.
    • Avoid any products containing sodium lauryl sulfate. This ingredient is found in a huge array of soaps and shampoos, as it works as a foaming agent. However, sodium lauryl sulfate (which is also used in products to clean cars and garage floors) can be highly irritating and drying on the skin. It also breaks down skin's natural proteins, making skin more vulnerable to outside contaminants.[7]
    • Avoid parabens. Parabens are a group of chemicals commonly found in hygiene products such as shampoos, conditioners, body washes, lotions and scrubs. They are known to cause skin irritation, and pose multiple other health risks, including a link to cancer.[8]

    Use a humidifier. Dry air in your bedroom and home can exacerbate skin conditions such as eczema, causing the skin to become dehydrated and flaky. You can remedy this situation by investing in an air humidifier which will add moisture to the air and to your skin. Portable home humidifiers, along with humidifiers you can attach to a furnace, are easily available and can be found in a range of styles and price ranges.[4]
    • It is also possible to humidify the air in a room without buying a humidifier. House plants naturally increase the amount of moisture in the air through a process known as transpiration. The Areca Palm and the Boston Fern are two popular natural humidifiers.
    • One other way to humidify the air is to place a bowl or pot of water beneath a radiator or heat source. As the water heats it will evaporate, thus adding moisture to the air.

    Bathe less frequently, using warm water. Though showers can feel soothing on dry, itchy skin, bathing too often can actually strip moisture from the skin and make eczema worse. For this reason, you should limit your baths and showers to every 1 to 2 days if possible. Try to use warm water rather than hot and limit each session to 15 to 20 minutes, tops.
    • Make sure to moisturize after the shower, preferably while your skin is still damp as this locks in more moisture. Creams and lotions work well, but oil-based moisturizers are best as they last longer and form a barrier that prevents moisture from evaporating off the skin.
    • Also make sure to dry yourself carefully, so you don't irritate the eczema by rubbing too roughly. Use the palms of your hands to brush off any excess moisture, then use a clean, dry towel to gently pat yourself dry.[9]

Part 2 of 2: Using Natural Remedies

    Use aloe vera. The gel-like sap from the Aloe vera plant has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for wounds, burns and other skin conditions, thanks to it's soothing, healing properties. Many people have found it effective in the treatment of eczema, as it soothes itchiness and moisturizes the dry, flaky skin.
    • Although aloe vera is commonly used as an ingredient in many skin care products, these lotions and gels may also contain ingredients that irritate the skin. For this reason, it is best to buy an aloe vera plant from your local garden center or nursery and use the pure aloe vera gel instead.
    • To use the aloe vera, snap off a leaf and squeeze out the clear, gel-like substance. Smear this gel over the skin effected by eczema and leave to soak in. You can store the leaf in the refrigerator for multiple uses.
    • Pure aloe vera is not associated with any negative side effects when used topically, so it is safe to use as often as necessary.[10]

    Try chamomile. Chamomile is a popular natural treatment for eczema, as it is said to sooth itchiness and calm inflammation. It can be used in one of two ways:
    • Firstly, you can make chamomile tea by brewing dried chamomile flowers in boiling water for approximately 15 minutes. Strain the flowers and allow the tea to cool slightly. Make a warm compress by soaking a clean cloth in the chamomile, wringing out the excess moisture, then pressing it against the affected skin for 10-15 minutes.
    • Secondly, you can use chamomile essential oils to sooth eczema, either by massaging the oils directly onto the skin, or adding a few drops to a warm bath.
    • Be aware that some people develop on allergic reaction to chamomile, so you may want to test it on a small patch of skin before using.[11]

    Apply calendula lotion. Calendula is a marigold-like flower whose extract is commonly use in skin lotions and salves. It is reputed to have skin healing properties, while also reducing pain and inflammation. Many calendula products, such as soaps, oils, lotions, salves and creams can be found at health food stores.
    • These products are preferable to those found in drug stores, as they usually contain a higher percentage of pure calendula and less potentially irritating ingredients.
    • Calendula products can be applied liberally all over the skin, as they are not known to produce any negative side effects when applied topically.[12]

    Use organic coconut oil. Organic cold pressed virgin coconut oil is a highly effective moisturizer which many eczema suffers claim to be far more effective than expensive store bought creams. It can be found in health food stores, online and in select supermarkets. Apply the oil (which looks like a solid but quickly melts) on eczema patches all over the body and allow to sink in.[13]
    • Cold pressed means that the oil was processed at temperatures below 116 degrees, allowing all of the oil's nutrients, enzymes and minerals to be preserved.

    Take warm baths. A warm bath -- containing added eczema-soothing ingredients -- can be very effective in easing itchiness and relieving pain. Remember that hot water can aggravate eczema, so keep the temperature in the lukewarm to warm range. Some of the best additions include:
    • Oatmeal or colloidal oatmeal: Regular uncooked oatmeal or colloidal oatmeal (which is a form of very finely ground oatmeal made specifically for bathing in) can be sprinkled into the bathwater to soothe dry skin.
    • Baking soda: A tablespoon of baking soda can be added to the bathwater to ease symptoms of itchiness.
    • Bleach: One half a cup of regular bleach can be diluted in bathwater for a remedy that is believed to kill bacteria on the surface of the skin, thus preventing the eczema from spreading. This dilution is intended for a standard U.S. bath tub, filled to the drainage holes. [14] It is advisable to start out using one quarter cup of bleach. Do not ever exceed one half cup. Make sure to use regular (6%) bleach. Some brands of bleach are sold in concentrated form which will affect the dilution.

    Take evening primrose oil. Evening primrose oil is popularly believed to help with eczema, as it contains gamma-linolenic acid, a rare fatty acid which nourishes the skin and it thought to correct deficiencies in skin lipids, thus reducing inflammation. Evening primrose oil is usually taken orally, as a supplement.[15]

    Try sweet almond oil. Sweet almond oil is often used in the treatment of eczema as it contains ursolic and oleic acids, which are believed to reduce inflammation and help repair the skin. It can be applied liberally all over the body as a moisturizer, or it can be spread all over the skin before baths and showers, creating a barrier that protects the skin from the drying effects of hot water.[2]

    Try alternative treatments, such as homeopathy, hypnosis or acupuncture.Alternative medical treatments such as homeopathy, hypnosis and acupuncture have sometimes been found successful in improving eczema -- though this is often due to their effectiveness at reducing stress (which can cause eczema), or the result of a placebo effect. However, if you are struggling to find a solution to your eczema, they may be worth a try.[16]

Sprinting for Muscle

Sprinting

Here's what you need to know...

•  Sprinting isn't the primary method for muscle growth, but like all speed work, it can quickly get you bigger.
•  A few sprint workouts during mass phases can greatly reduce bodyfat accumulation and also increase insulin sensitivity so you get even leaner in the process.
•  Doing some speed work immediately after your warm-up will potentiate the CNS, thereby increasing force output.
Sprinting has typically been associated with athletic development rather than as a way to acquire quality muscle mass. However, while in many ways sprinters and bodybuilders couldn't be more different, the fact is there's considerable overlap between the two disciplines and you can exploit this overlap in your pursuit of bigger, stronger legs.

Speed work such as sprinting isn't the primary method for muscle growth, but it does "speed up" the hypertrophy process. So think of sprinting as a secondary technique for size, one that can get us to our size destination much faster.

Here's how specific speed work and sprinting can help you with your physique.


1. Speed Work Prevents Fat Gain

Speed training creates a huge metabolic disturbance and is one of the best methods for losing or maintaining fat stores. According to the many DEXA scans I've run on athletes and clients, body fat stores rapidly decrease and muscle size increases once sprinting is employed. One reason is the effect (and after-effect) sprinting has on our underlying physiology. Sprinting significantly increases EPOC, or post-exercise oxygen consumption, which sucks up calories like a sponge for hours after high intensity training.

This can really assist your efforts during mass phases by limiting unwanted fat gain. Keep in mind that you only need a few hundred calories to pack on a single pound of muscle, while any extra will be diverted to fat stores. Sprinting effectively establishes a safeguard against this all too common bulking pitfall.

Additionally, since a leaner body is more insulin sensitive and has less aromatase (estrogenic) activity, it's in your best interest to keep body fat to a reasonable level – even while adding size.


2. Speed Work Improves Anaerobic Conditioning Levels

The more work we do in the hypertrophy training zones (70-85% of 1RM), the better we can grow. Sprinting can ensure that the specific energy support systems (alactic and lactic) that fuel performance in these zones are performing at optimal levels. This will generate greater rep work output, resulting in more muscle growth.


3. Speed Work Potentiates the CNS

By sequencing some speed work immediately after your warm-up or movement prep but before strength work, your CNS and force output will be far greater, resulting in more growth.

Furthermore, even general speed training will induce specific adaptations in the neuromuscular system (i.e., rate of motor unit recruitment, synchronization, etc.) that will allow the body to generate force faster. The faster you can summon force, the more total force you can generate during a rep attempt. This allows you to lift more weight and complete more volume, two of the most important variables for building muscle mass.


4. Speed Work is a Form of Progressive Overload

Barbells, dumbbells, and kettlebells are forms of external resistance. However, sprinting offers a not-so-common form of resistance by way of the momentum of our body mass, which creates another essential source of overload.

Studies show that the landing impact during sprinting can exceed three times bodyweight. Multiply this across several foot contacts during a sprint and you can see both the challenge and benefit that this type of training can bring for promoting tissue growth.


5. Speed Work Functions as Supplemental Hip Training

Sprinting is a good general test for hamstring strength, since the hamstrings are the dominant muscle group in sprinting. The specific joint angles that occur during a sprint mimic a reverse hyper, a staple supplemental exercise for people looking to get strong or big. Integrating some speed work into your training helps address weaknesses at the posterior chain and ensures that this area is contributing maximally during your lifts.

Real World Evidence

Powerlifters are very big and strong. They also do a form of direct speed work in their training programming called Dynamic Effort work, which is markedly similar to sprinting. Their speed work helps recruit more mass, increase force production, drive through sticking points, and provide a new source of stimulus to prevent stagnancy – not to mention putting on size!

Another example of individuals who do speed work, obviously, is sprinters. Many are very muscular and extremely lean, often without doing much resistance training work. Of course, the best of the best have genetic advantages that influence their results, but clearly sprinting helps accentuate their genetic gifts.

These sprinters are generally very muscular because the conditions required for growth are all present during sprinting – general overload, volume-fatigue, and high eccentric contractions.


The Plan

Note: You must start with an Acceleration/Speed Prep Phase. This is designed to increase specific strength of the sprinting musculature and improve coordination, flexibility, and mobility. It also helps prevent the initial muscle strain that often occurs when someone integrates standard sprinting into his program without preparing for it.


The Program

Week 1: 5 x 5-second sprints on treadmill at an incline.
Week 2: 5 x 20-yard sled sprints using bodyweight + bodyweight as external load.
Week 3: 5-10 x 10-yard sprints
Week 4: 5 x 20-yard sprints
If you're an athlete, you could expand this to 40 yards x 3 reps in week #5, but there's no need to train at a greater distance if you're just looking to get big and strong. Twenty yards is sufficient and safer, too.

The progressions provided will still enable you to build speed and power, groove your sprint pattern, limit fatigue, and reduce the rate by which the limbs have to react – all of which can be a source of sprinting injury. By the fourth week you should be ready to go with standard sprint training.

Here's how to apply your sprint work into a 3-day "modified" Westside Barbell template. If you prefer to train 4 days a week, make sure to sprint every other training day on lower body days only, so you enable full recovery and limit both local neural fatigue and lower body muscular fatigue.
